Los Angeles: Paul Garza Gonzales, the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics boxing champion, was found guilty of sexually abusing two young girls. Since he pleaded guilty in Los Angeles County Superior Court, the 57-year-old pugilist was sentenced to three years and four months in jail instead of the usual 18 months.
Gonzales was given a light sentence, which irritated the grandmother of one of the victims. “He is pleading no contest, not fair, she is a child,” the grandmother was quoted as saying by MSN News.
In December 2017, Paul Gonzales was arrested for the first time for sexual abuse of minors. His first victim was a 13-year-old student, and his second victim was his niece, who was 14 at the time. He was then released on a USD 50,000 bond, which was raised and paid by his boxing fans.
Gonzales was one of the most successful athletes at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. He went on to win the gold medal in that edition of the Olympics, defeating Salvatore Todisco of Italy in the light flyweight final. The following year, Gonzales began his professional career.
