Kolkata : As the sun rises over Jamshedpur and anticipation builds for the 134th edition of the Durand Cup, one figure stands quietly confident on the practice ground — Khalid Jamil, a name synonymous with grit and passion in Indian football. For Jamil, this tournament is far more than just a fixture on the calendar — it’s personal.

He’s been here before. As a player, he’s felt the pressure of the crowd, the intensity of the competition, and the pride that comes with participating in Asia’s oldest football tournament. Now, as a head coach of Jamshedpur FC, that emotion hasn’t faded, it has only intensified.

The Durand Cup is very special to me,” Jamil shared, his voice steady with conviction. “I’ve played in this tournament, and I know what it means, not just to the players, but to Indian football. It’s the oldest tournament in Asia, with so much history. Being part of it again as a coach is a proud moment.”

As he leads his side into their opening match, Jamil is well aware of the challenge that awaits. Their first opponent, Tribhuvan Army FC from Nepal, is no stranger to Indian turf. Known for their fitness, discipline, and familiarity with Indian football, the Nepalese outfit is expected to be a tough competitor.

They’ve been coming to India for years and always put up a strong fight,” Jamil acknowledged. “They play with great intensity and we have to be sharp. This is not a team you can take lightly.”

Yet Jamil’s confidence is rooted in careful preparation. Despite a short build-up to the tournament, the focus in training has been clear — build chemistry, create rhythm, and foster unity.

With limited time, it’s important for the players to gel quickly. The Durand Cup is not just a pre-season event, it’s a serious competition. Every training session has mattered, and I’ve been happy with the way the players have responded.”

This year’s squad is a mix of seasoned campaigners and fresh talent, a deliberate strategy from the veteran coach who knows the value of balance in high-stakes tournaments.

Experience brings stability. And youth brings hunger,” Jamil reflected. “We have both. The seniors will guide the youngsters, and for the young boys, this is a great opportunity to prove themselves. The first match will set the tone. That’s where all our energy is right now.”

But beyond tactics and preparation, Jamil knows there’s one ingredient that can turn a good performance into a great one, i.e., the fans. As the team prepares to take the field, he sends out a heartfelt message to the supporters.

The fans are everything. Their energy pushes us forward. Playing at home only feels like an advantage when the stands are full and loud. We want them to come in numbers, bring the passion, and stand behind the team. We’ll give our best, and we need them with us.”

As Khalid Jamil gears up for yet another chapter in his Durand Cup journey, his message is clear: this is more than just a tournament. It’s a tradition. It’s a proving ground. And it’s time to write the next story.
