Kolkata : A celebratory dinner for India’s Boxing contingent who grabbed record 10 medals took an unexpected turn after a Glasgow-based Indian restaurant came under fire for displaying an inaccurate map of India in its logo.
The restaurant, Mister Singh’s India – The Home of Curry, later apologised and deactivated its official Instagram account after facing widespread criticism online.
The incident occurred after India’s boxing team gathered at the restaurant to celebrate its historic performance at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, where the squad won 10 medals, including seven golds.
Olympic and Commonwealth Games silver medallist Lovlina Borgohain, who is from Assam, noticed that the restaurant’s logo—printed on napkins and displayed outside the establishment—omitted India’s Northeast.
In a video recorded at the venue, Borgohain politely urged the management to correct the design.
“Please don’t take this the wrong way. I felt a little hurt by this. In the map of India, our NorthEast is missing. Yes, even outside, the map that’s displayed has cut off the NorthEast. As someone from the NorthEast, that really hurts us. That’s all I wanted to say. Please keep this in mind next time. Thank you so much”, said Lovlina.
The video quickly went viral on social media.
Besides this, the boundaries printed for Jammu & Kashmir on that same Map was also inaccurate as pointed out by Boxing Federation of India President Ajay Singh.
According to Singh, the issue was raised calmly with the restaurant management, which immediately acknowledged the mistake and agreed to change the logo.
“There was no confrontation. It was an aberration, and they assured us it would be corrected,” Singh said.
As criticism mounted online, the restaurant issued a public apology, saying it was proud of its Indian heritage and had never intended to offend anyone.
The management said it would immediately replace the logo with an accurate map of India and apologised to the Indian boxing contingent.
Shortly after posting the apology, however, the restaurant deactivated its official Instagram account as negative comments and poor ratings continued to pour in.
The restaurant has operated in Glasgow for more than three decades and has often hosted members of the Indian community and visiting dignitaries.
