
Lucknow : Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) pulled off one of the most spectacular and sensational nail-biting season’s first Super Over match by defeating the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the 38th match of the IPL season 2026 at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium, Lucknow, on 26th April, Sunday night. While both teams ended the match tied, LSG’s Mohsin Khan produced a five-wicket haul, decimating the KKR top order. Rinku Singh played an innings of a lifetime to drag his side to 155. The Super Over saw Sunil Narine deliver a magical performance, creating history with one of the shortest Super Overs in IPL history.
The match began with LSG winning the toss and choosing to bowl first. To execute the decision, Mohsin Khan came up with an absolutely unleashed display of dominance with the new ball. With flawless pace, he dismantled the top order of KKR, sending back Ajinkya Rahane (10 off 15), Tim Seifert (0 off 3), and Rovman Powell (1 off 4) inside the powerplay. KKR were left struggling at 31 for 4.
While Angkrish Raghuvanshi also got out after scoring 9 off 8 due to obstructing the field, Cameron Green (34 off 21) tried to settle the innings, but Mohsin Khan struck again. He took another wicket and in the very next ball dismissed Anukul Roy for a duck. He ended up stunning figures of 5 wickets in 4 overs for 23 runs, with an economy of 5.75, marking his maiden IPL five-wicket haul. KKR were crumbling at 93 for 7 in the 15th over.
In this situation, Rinku stood out under immense pressure. Not only did he rescue and revive KKR from total disaster, but he also played an exceptionally brilliant innings, remaining unbeaten on 83 off 51 deliveries. In the final over by Digvesh Rathi, Rinku ferociously launched 4 sixes and hammered 26 runs in the over. With that, Rinku guided the innings to a strong finish at 155 for 7.
In the chase, LSG struggled to find the start and continuity they needed in front of KKR’s tight bowling attack. Rishabh Pant (42 off 38 balls) and Aiden Markram (31 off 27 balls) tried to anchor the innings, while Ayush Badoni contributed 14 off 19. Varun Chakravarthy (2 wickets for 33 runs in 4 overs), Sunil Narine (1 wicket for 23 runs in 4 overs), and Vaibhav Arora (2 wickets for 24 runs in 4 overs) brilliantly held the middle order by taking crucial wickets, creating pressure and difficulty for LSG to chase 156. The match finally turned into a thrilling, roller-coaster, dramatic final over where 17 runs were needed. Tyagi came up to bowl. The first ball went for 1 run. The second ball was a no-ball to Himansh Singh, giving additional runs. The third delivery was also a no-ball and resulted in runs, and the pressure kept mounting. On the next ball, he took a wicket. In the last ball, LSG needed 7 runs to win. Mohammed Shami hit a sensational six, taking the game into the Super Over after LSG scored 155 for 8.
In the Super Over, Sunil Narine came up with the ball for KKR, while Nicholas Pooran and Aiden Markram came out to bat. On his very first ball, Narine produced a masterclass, stumping out Pooran. Rishabh Pant came in next and managed to take a single off the following delivery, but on the very next ball, Markram was dismissed by a spectacular catch between Powell and Rinku at the long-on boundary. LSG lost two wickets in just one run (W, 1, W).
Then Rinku Singh and Rovman Powell came out, and on Shami’s first delivery in the Super Over, Rinku smashed a boundary to seal a breathtaking victory for LSG. This was the first Super Over of the IPL 2026 season, and Sunil Narine’s magical spell created history for the shortest Super Over in IPL.
Rinku Singh deservedly became the Player of the Match with an unbeaten 83 and an outstanding four catches in the match. With this victory, KKR moved to 8th position with 5 points, while LSG remained at the bottom of the table with 4 points.
