Kolkata : Mumbai City FC sailed past Indian Navy 4-1 in the first Group B game of the Durand Cup at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan (VYBK). Mumbai creates a lot of golden chances, out of which Bipin Singh and Vikram could not bear the fruits.
Three goals in the second half, including two by the substitute and game-winner Adersh Mattummal’s piledriver gave the Navy the lead in the 42nd minute, but Vikram Pratap Singh’s goal for the Islanders equalised the score shortly before halftime. Lallianzuala Chhangte smiled in the last moments.
Abhishek Joshi tripped Spaniard Alberto Noguera Ripoll in the penalty area in the 64th minute, and referee Senthil Nathan immediately pointed to the spot. With easy, Greg Stewart caught goalkeeper Vishnu off guard, giving the Islanders the lead. In the 81st minute, Buckingham substituted Chhangte, who left at least three Navy defenders in his wake. Chhangte would be the first to give fellow substitute Gurkirat Singh credit for his second goal, which was scored in extra time, when he launched a solo run down the right from virtually the halfway line and found him with a measured pass inside the box. The quick Mizo winger finished with precision.
