New Delhi: BCCI apex council has received a conflict of interest complaint against former Indian international cricketer Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s appointment as team Indian mentor for the T20 World Cup.

Former life member of the Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association, Sanjeev Gupta who has previously filed a series of Conflict of Interest complaints against players and administrators, has written to the apex council members, claiming that Dhoni’s appointment violates the Conflict of Interest clause, which states that one person cannot hold two positions.

This came to light as PTI took to Twitter to inform the public about the current scenario after BCCI appointed Dhoni as the Indian cricket team mentor last night.

“Yes, Gupta has sent a letter to apex council members including Sourav (Ganguly) and Jay (Shah). He has cited clause 38 (4) of the BCCI constitution which loosely states that one person cannot be holding two separate posts. The Apex Council will need to consult its legal team to check the ramifications,” a BCCI source told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

Concurrently, Dhoni is also the captain of the Chennai Super Kings IPL team. So as per Gupta’s claim he would not be able to handle both the responsibilities at the same time.

Thus, it is evident that Dhoni’s status as a player in one squad and a mentor in another poses issues that require clarification. Secretary Jay Shah identified Dhoni as the WT20 mentor on the sidelines of the squad announcement on Wednesday.

The enigmatic wicketkeeper-batsman led India to two global titles, the 2007 T20 World Cup in South Africa and the 2011 ODI World Cup in India, making him one of the most successful captains in Indian cricket history.

After retiring from international cricket last year, he has generally kept a quiet profile, concentrating on his IPL commitments and organic farming in his hometown of Ranchi.

The highly regarded wicketkeeper-batsman appeared in 90 Tests, 350 One-Day Internationals, and 98 Twenty-20 Internationals, scoring 4876, 10773, and 1617 runs in those forms, respectively.

Currently, Dhoni is with his IPL club, Chennai Super Kings, as they prepare for the league’s return on September 19 in the United Arab Emirates.
