Kolkata: Former Indian forward Dipendu Biswas has stated that the Indian Super League (ISL) should decrease the foreign quota thus echoing India head coach Igor Stimac. The Croatian had earlier mentioned that domestic players should get more chances at the club level.

The former National League and Federation Cup winner with the Kolkata giants East Bengal and Mohun Bagan has mentioned concerns about the Indian team. “No doubt ISL is the top League in the country, and it did improve Indian football but if clubs play with five foreign players, it will be difficult for the Indian players to contribute to the national side,” said Biswas, currently the technical director with Mohammedan Sporting Club.

“Indian captain Sunil Chhetri who is 36 years old now and is in the twilight of his career, so it’s important that new players should come up and replace him in the national side. If the quota doesn’t decrease it will be a problem for the country’s national side.”

As a forward Biswas has played 40 games for the national side. He thinks that India lacks out-an-out goalscorers. “They are heavily dependent on Chhetri so it’s important that ISL teams should look for more and more Indian strikers it will only happen if the academy works well. And if the foreign quota decrease, it will help the national side in the future,” Biswas said.
