Chennai : The 46th FIDE Chess Olympiad concluded in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, with the host nation emerging as the champion in the Open section. The prestigious international chess tournament brought together players from across the world, celebrating strategic thinking, sportsmanship and the spirit of international cooperation. Uzbekistan secured its second Chess Olympiad title, following its historic victory in Chennai in 2022.
Organised by the International Chess Federation (FIDE) in collaboration with the Uzbekistan Chess Federation, the tournament was held from September 15 to 27, 2026, in the historic city of Samarkand. The event featured two major competitions: the Open section and the Women’s section. Thousands of players, team captains, officials and chess enthusiasts participated in this global sporting celebration, making it an important event in the international chess calendar.
The main highlight of the tournament was India became the only Country who secure both medals in Open and Women’s Section and Uzbekistan’s remarkable performance in the Open section. Playing on home soil, the Uzbek team demonstrated exceptional skill, discipline and teamwork throughout the competition. In the final round, Uzbekistan defeated Ukraine by 2.5–1.5 points to secure the gold medal. The victory created an atmosphere of celebration among the home supporters and reaffirmed the country’s growing influence in international chess.
India delivered an impressive performance, securing the silver medal in the Open section after drawing 2–2 against Hungary in the final round. Germany claimed the bronze medal after defeating the Netherlands. In the Women’s section, China won the gold medal, while Kazakhstan secured silver and India finished with bronze. India also received the Gaprindashvili Cup for its combined performance in the Open and Women’s competitions . Great Performance and a Great Comeback for India . The tournament was significant not only for its competitive matches but also for promoting friendship, cultural exchange and unity among nations. The closing ceremony in Samarkand featured medal presentations, fireworks and a spectacular drone light show, marking a memorable end to the event.
