New Delhi : Abhishek Sharma set the Arun Jaitley Stadium alight on Thursday, smashing the fastest century by an Indian in men’s T20 internationals during the third T20I against Afghanistan.

Abhishek reached the milestone in just 30 balls, breaking Rohit Sharma’s previous Indian record of a 35-ball century in the format.

The left-handed opener clobbered 10 sixes and nine fours in a whirlwind knock to break former captain Rohit Sharma’s record of scoring the fastest T20I century, which he had recorded against Sri Lanka in December 2017.

Abhishek’s century was also the fastest for any batter against a Test playing nation. He brought up his hundred with a single in the ninth over of the Indian innings.

The innings was Abhishek’s third century in the shortest format to go with 12 half-centuries. Only Rohit (5) and Suryakumar Yadav (4) have scored more centuries among India batters. This was Abhishek’s 10th ton in T20 Cricket equalling with Virat Kohli for most T20 Hundreds by an Indian.

Abhishek took 16 balls to score his first fifty, and gave Afghanistan no respite after getting to that milestone, taking only 14 more balls to rush to his century. He eventually fell in the tenth over of India’s innings, having scored 108 off 34 balls. He had hit nine fours and 11 sixes. Before this match, Abhishek had climbed to No. 2 on the ICC’s T20I rankings for batters, with only his team-mate Ishan Kishan ranked above him.

India posted 221-7 (20), and eventually demolished Afghanistan on 94 runs, handing them a massive 127 runs defeat – Afghanistan’s biggest margin of loss in T20I Cricket. The Men in Blue clean swept Afghanistan 3-0 and Abhishek Sharma with 229 runs in whole series comprising 3 T20Is, was awarded Player of the Series Award.
