The 38-year-old Argentine captain delivered another masterclass Monday, scoring both goals in Argentina’s 2-0 victory over Austria and securing the defending champions’ place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 knockout stage. More importantly, he once again demonstrated why Argentina remains a more dangerous team whenever the ball is at his feet.
Messi’s performance was remarkable not only because of the result but because of the circumstances. He missed an early penalty, a rare setback for a player renowned for thriving under pressure. Lesser players might have faded from the contest. Instead, Messi responded by scoring in the 38th minute and again in stoppage time, turning a tense encounter into a comfortable Argentine victory.
The brace carried historic significance. Messi’s first goal moved him past Germany’s Miroslav Klose as the leading scorer in men’s World Cup history. At the same time, his second took him to 18 World Cup goals overall, surpassing even Brazilian legend Marta’s tally of 17 across the men’s and women’s tournaments.
Yet statistics alone do not explain Messi’s influence.

Argentina boasts one of the deepest squads in international football, featuring stars such as Julián Álvarez, Thiago Almada and Emiliano Martínez. But when matches become tight and opponents frustrate the reigning champions, the team still looks to Messi for inspiration.

Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni has repeatedly emphasised the psychological lift Messi provides. His presence alone commands defensive attention, creates room for teammates and instills confidence throughout the squad. Austria learned that lesson firsthand.
Messi’s importance is further reflected in his current form. He has scored five goals in Argentina’s first two World Cup matches, accounting for every Argentine goal in the tournament so far. At an age when most footballers have long retired from international competition, he remains the focal point of the world champions’ attack.
As Argentina prepares for the knockout rounds, opponents know exactly where the danger lies. They also know stopping Messi is easier said than done.
For Argentina, that remains the most reassuring reality of all. Nearly 20 years after his first World Cup appearance, Messi continues to be the player who turns difficult matches into victories and great teams into title contenders.
