Kolkata : Co-hosts Mexico will raise the curtain on the biggest-ever World Cup when the first match of the 104-game extravaganza kicks off with their Group A meeting against South Africa.

By a twist of fate, the clash is a reverse repeat of the opening game of the 2010 tournament, when Bafana Bafana were the host nation.

Hugo Broos’ side secured their place at a fourth global showpiece by finishing top of Group C in CAF qualifying. Left-back Aubrey Modiba is expected to be fit for South Africa after recovering from a hamstring problem.

Mexico possible starting XI –

Rangel; Gallardo, Vasquez, Montes, Reyes; Gutierrez, Lira, Fidalgo; Quinones, Alvarado, Jimenez

South Africa possible starting XI –

Williams; Mudau, Okon, Mbokazi, Modiba; Mokoena, Sithole, Mbatha; Moremi, Foster, Appollis.

Coaches’ Corner –

“I haven’t experienced a greater thrill in 50 years of football than playing in a World Cup at home. I’ve lived through a lot, but this is unforgettable. That’s what I’ve told the boys, and I think I’ve convinced them. They feel comfortable; it’s something very powerful, and they have grown together like a family. They express it openly.”

Javier Aguirre, Mexico coach.

“Mexico are the strongest team in the group, so tomorrow will be a very tough game for us. I can assure you that my team is ready, and we’ll fight for every metre and every ball for the full 90 minutes. After that, we’ll see.”

Hugo Broos, South Africa coach

“Of course, the expectations are very high, and it’s going to be an amazing game, with an amazing atmosphere. As a team, we’re looking forward to the game and we’re excited. We know how much it means to everyone back home.”

Teboho Mokoena, South Africa midfielder.

Previous World Cup meetings

Sixteen years ago to the day of their 2026 clash, South Africa and Mexico went head-to-head in the opening game of the first-ever World Cup to be staged in Africa. Siphiwe Tshabalala etched his name in the history books with a spectacular opening goal to send the home fans into raptures, before Rafael Marquez – who will be present at the game once again as an assistant to Javier Aguirre – responded for El Tri as both teams drew 1-1.
