IPL 2026: Cooper Connolly’s Century in vain as Sunrisers Hyderabad Blaze Past Punjab Kings to Move to the Top Spot

Hyderabad :  Sunrisers Hyderabad ascended to the top of the table after outclassing Punjab Kings by 33 runs in a high-scoring clash in the 49th match of the Indian Premier League 2026 on Wednesday at Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium, Hyderabad. SRH posted a massive 235, assisted by brilliant knocks from Heinrich Klaasen and Ishan Kishan, while PBKS’ Cooper Connolly fought bravely and came up with a sensational maiden IPL(Indian Premier League) century.

The match began with PBKS won the toss and elected to bowl first. SRH started from the very first over with fiery batting and explosive hitting by Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head. Both added 54 runs as an opening partnership in just 3.2 overs, but then the breakthrough came for PBKS when Lockie Ferguson dismissed Abhishek for 35 off 13 balls. After the wicket, Head continued his aggressive approach alongside Ishan, and SRH reached a massive 79/1 at the end of the powerplay. Momentum shifted slightly in favour of PBKS after Yuzvendra Chahal dismissed Travis Head for 38 off 19 balls. However, Ishan Kishan and Heinrich Klaasen took charge and stitched together a crucial 88-run partnership for the third wicket. Ishan scored a superb half-century, while PBKS’ poor fielding proved costly as multiple chances were dropped by Cooper Connolly, Shashank Singh, and Ferguson respectively, giving SRH batters several lifelines, especially Klaasen and Kishan. Most notably, those dropped catches came off Chahal’s bowling. Ishan eventually fell after scoring 55 off 32 balls, dismissed by Arshdeep Singh. Then Nitish Kumar Reddy played a rapid unbeaten cameo of 29 off 13 balls alongside Klaasen. Heinrich Klaasen batted brilliantly, scoring a valuable unbeaten 69 off 43 balls. This duo added 63 runs in the final five overs and propelled SRH to 235/4 after 20 overs, with another 200-plus total adding a new chapter to a growing one-sided rivalry with the bat. SRH now have eight 200-plus totals against PBKS, equalling Mumbai Indians’ record of eight such scores against Delhi Capitals. This is now the joint-most by any team against a single opponent in IPL history. PBKS bowling was expensive, especially Marco Jansen, who conceded 61 runs in four overs without taking a wicket, and Arshdeep Singh, who gave away 43 runs with one wicket in four overs. Together they leaked 104 runs in eight overs. Chahal performed well with figures of 1/32, but he was unable to find support from the fielders.

Chasing the massive target of 236, PBKS were unable to get a flawless start. Within the first four overs, they lost major top-order wickets including Priyansh Arya, dismissed by Pat Cummins for 1 off 3 balls, Prabhsimran Singh, dismissed by Nitish Kumar Reddy for 3 off 4 balls, and skipper Shreyas Iyer, who fell to Eshan Malinga for 5 off 5 balls. PBKS were reeling at 23/3 in the fourth over and eventually ended the powerplay at 57/3. Young PBKS batter Cooper Connolly stood tall with a composed and mature display of batting skills, registering a splendid maiden IPL century in just 57 balls. He remained unbeaten on 107 off 59 deliveries, smashing 7 fours and 8 sixes. Connolly found support from the other end through Marcus Stoinis, who scored 28 off 14 balls, and Suryansh Shedge, who contributed 25 off 17 balls. However, regular falling wickets and the climbing required run rate pushed the chase out of PBKS’ reach. PBKS eventually finished at 202/7 after 20 overs. Pat Cummins delivered an outstanding performance with figures of 2/34 and was deservedly named Player of the Match. Eshan Malinga also bowled well, while spinner Shivam Kumar impressed with figures of 2/45 in four overs. SRH also showcased excellent fielding, including impressive catches by Cummins and Eshan Malinga in the opening overs.

SRH displayed a complete all-round performance, securing a convincing victory and becoming the table toppers with 14 points. Meanwhile, PBKS’ poor fielding proved extremely costly as they suffered their third consecutive defeat of the season and slipped to second position on the table with 13 points. The loss also marked Punjab’s ninth straight IPL defeat in Hyderabad.
